If you’re searching for music teaching jobs in Portland or tutoring jobs in Portland, most of your options probably fall into two camps. One is building your own studio, which means handling your own marketing, scheduling, and billing. The other is joining a large national platform where you’re one profile among thousands. Onsight Education is a smaller, local alternative. We connect Portland families with music teachers and academic tutors, and we handle the business side so instructors can spend their time teaching.
What we look for in music teachers and tutors
Real command of your subject. For music, that means fluency on your instrument or voice and a working grasp of theory. For tutoring, it means solid knowledge of the material and familiarity with what students are actually being asked to do in class or on a test.
Teaching experience. This could be private students, classroom work, TA or peer tutoring, or a tutoring center. We want to know you’ve explained something to a real learner and adjusted when your first explanation didn’t land.
Meeting students where they are. A nervous eight-year-old beginner and a high schooler preparing for auditions need different things. So do a student who is behind in algebra and one aiming for a top SAT score.
Reliability. Families plan their week around lesson time. Showing up consistently and communicating early when something changes matters as much as expertise.
How the application process works
- Tell us about yourself. Fill out the short form on the For Instructors page.
- A conversation. We’ll talk about what you teach, who you like working with, and the kind of schedule you’re looking for.
- Skills evaluation and teaching demonstration. You’ll have a short session with an experienced instructor in your area.
- Reference checks. We’ll contact two people who have seen you teach or tutor.
- Background check. You’ll complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check. No instructor is matched with a family until it comes back approved. Under Oregon’s rules, a prior check with a school or another organization doesn’t transfer, so everyone completes a new one.
What working with Onsight looks like
Instructors work with Onsight as independent contractors. You choose which students to take on and what availability to offer. Onsight finds families, handles scheduling, and takes care of billing and collecting payment. Lessons can be in person or virtual.
Who we’re looking for
Onsight is a new Portland business building a small roster of instructors. We’re interested in:
- Music teachers on any instrument, and voice teachers
- Academic tutors in math, science, reading and writing
- Tutors for SAT and ACT prep
