Onsight Education is a Portland tutoring and music-lesson service. We match families with independent tutors and music teachers for one-on-one lessons, in person around Portland or online.
Why we started Onsight
Finding a good tutor or music teacher usually means asking around, scrolling through directory listings, or taking a chance on a stranger online. Founder Benjamin Schulman has tutored students across Portland since 2019. He started Onsight in 2026 to make that search simpler: one place to go, and a real person who learns what your student needs before suggesting anyone.
How it works
- Tell us about the student: the subject or instrument, age or grade, goals, and when you’re free.
- We recommend a match. We reply within one business day to talk through what you’re looking for, then suggest an instructor whose experience fits.
- Start lessons. Your instructor sets up the first lesson with you directly.
Who teaches
Instructors who teach through Onsight are independent educators with real teaching experience in their subjects, from a classical and jazz multi-instrumentalist to math and science tutors with years of one-on-one work. Before being matched with a student, each one completes a background check, a teaching evaluation, and reference checks.

What we teach
Academic tutoring covers math from elementary through calculus, science, reading and writing, test prep, and study skills. Music lessons cover piano, guitar, drums, bass, cello, saxophone and more, plus songwriting, composition and theory.
